Prins Philip, hertug af Edinburgh, har stået ved kone dronning elisabeths side for over 70 years – an impressive feat with or without a royal title. Mænd bortset fra at være en fremtrædende løsning på Netflix’s Kronen and a long time to Britain’s ruling monarch, Philips history is largely circumvented in the royal news cycle.

Han er ikke fra England
Despite his prominent role in the British royal family, Prince Philip is not originally from the region. He was born in Greece, in the Greek and Danish royal families, but was forced to exile with his family when he was just an infant. Before his marriage with queen Elizabeth gave Philip the Greek and Danish titles and adopted his mother’s maiden name, Mountbatten.

Hans søstre were not invited to his wedding for a scary cause
Da Philip went to school in England at the age of 9 years, changed many in the length of his absence. Hans mor, prinsesse Alice fra Battenberg, blev diagnosticeret med skizofreni og institutionaliseret på et privat anlæg i Schweiz; his far went up with another woman and moved to the south of France; and all four of his sisters became married to German princes – three of them were thought to share Nazi feelings and belongings. With the end of the Second World War many years before, and tensions still high in Europe, Philips sisters became possible with the third kingdom screamed by the royal wedding guest list.
Years later Philip spoke about the Nazi rumors about his sisters and told European history researcher Jonathan Petropoulus that although there was jealousy in the family over the Jewish people’s success (sounds a bit anti-Semitic to me …), he was never “aware that nogen jeg familien faktisk udtrykker antisemitiske synspunkter. “
I 1960 there was a compromise – the house would remain House of Windsor, but men’s descendants without royal titles would assume the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
Han har en ukonventionel sans for humor
Philip is known for speaking with his thoughts and often makes risky and politically incorrect jokes during royal engagements. When he met Malala Yousafzai (who was shot by a Taliban member in 2012 because of her education-based activism), he told her: “[Children] go to school because their parents do not want them in the house.”
Other jokes, as he has made, have not been down.
