I mean, who among us is not inexplicable enough to tear off Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s split in 2007? Og du lurer ikke nogen, if you say you did not talk when your Twitter feed announced that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris were over. It’s easy to argue for that good, you might just like a certain celebrity and would like to see them happy.

“We associate ourselves with famous people because they symbolize our deepest wish for power, attention, access to resources and the social success that can be enjoyed,” she says. Med andra ord symboliserer celebrates our “unlimited fantasies”, explains Schafler. So when something breaks up throws a tooth in our idealization, it throws us away.

When celebrities do not meet the expectations we hold them (simply because they are celebrities), we get sad. “It reminds us of truth, people are limited,” she says. “We are limited in the amount of control we have over our lives, how long we live, and what other people do for us.” So when an apparently ideal couple as Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt call it, they are mostly slapped in the face with a reminder that the reality and the pain that can come with it can happen to all … including us.

The bad news is that as long as there is a celebrity couple to be loved, there will be a celebrity break that will be taken care of. The good news is that it’s quite normal to be sad. “Whether we like it or not, celebrities are part of our worldview and highly integrated in our culture,” says Schafler. “It’s normal to be ked of it when our world outlook is covered, damaged or totalized.”
